How to Cook Pancakes

There is no doubt that pancakes are enjoyed all over the world by millions of people. They are one of the most popular breakfast food options globally which is not surprising given how delicious they are. While many cafes and restaurants have their own special pancake recipe, not everyone can afford to eat out. Besides, fresh, homemade pancakes are always better and offer a fun opportunity to get creative. With that in mind, we have compiled a small list of creative pancake recipes that you can try out when you want to satisfy your pancake cravings. To get you started, here is a detailed recipe to make basic pancakes:

Basic pancake recipe:

This recipe is simple, easy to make and offers the right balance between sweet and fluffy. You can serve these pancakes up with a simple dollop of butter and some syrup or, follow the upcoming topping recipes to spice things up.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups all purpose flour (you can substitute it with plain cake flour)

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

3 tbsp white sugar (you can use brown sugar if you prefer)

1/4 tsp baking soda

1/2 salt

1 cup milk

2 tbsp additional milk

4 tbsp butter (melted)

1 large egg

Method

1- Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar and salt in a medium sized bowl and whisk thoroughly.

2- In another bowl, whisk together the butter, egg and milk until well combined. Take care not to over whisk.

3- Add the wet ingredients into your flour mix and fold gently until everything is mixed together. Once again, do not over mix. Do not worry too much if your mixture is a little bit lumpy.

4- Take a large nonstick pan or skillet and lightly spray it with cooking spray. If you don’t have cooking spray, brush it with a bit of melted butter. Place the pan on the stovetop and tune it to a medium-low temperature.

5- Spooning 1/4 cup at a time, cook your pancake batter in batches and after 3-4 minutes or when it starts to bubble on the top, turn it over. Cook both sides of the pancake until they turn golden in colour.

6- You can try flipping the pancakes with your pan/skillet if you are experience but be careful not to spill batter onto the stove. This particular batter makes up to 8 small pancakes or 6 larger ones.

Now that you know how to make basic pancakes, you can try out some of the toppings below:

  • Fresh cream and strawberries

Mix together 1-2 full cups of fresh, shopped strawberries and 1/2 of white or brown sugar in a bowl. Let them sit for 1 hour until they caramelise and top your pancakes. You can add some fresh cream or sour cream on top or leave it out if you wish.

  • Pecan nut and bacon syrup

Crumble 3-4 crispy fried bacon strips and drain most of the fat before mixing with 1/2-1 cup of pecan nuts finely chopped in a heated pan. Cook the mixture for 2 minutes and add 1/4 tsp of cider vinegar as well as 1 cup of maple syrup before heating for an extra 2-4 minutes. You can add more syrup if necessary.

  • Berrylicious topping

In a small pot, mix 1-2 cups of maple syrup with 1-2 cups of berries of your choice. Slice some ginger and add to the mixture before simmering for 10-15 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool and add some extra berries before serving on top of your pancakes.
